Trump-Iran Agreement Details Implications for Middle Eastern Nations and Global Security

US and Iran Reach Memorandum of Understanding on 14-Point Agreement

The United States has released details of its memorandum of understanding with Iran, which covers 14 key points. The agreement was announced during a call with reporters on Wednesday, but neither side has made the full text publicly available.

According to the US official, the first clause of the agreement states that military operations between the two countries will be terminated “immediately and permanently” across all fronts, including in Lebanon. Additionally, both parties have committed to ensuring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon.

However, the agreement does not mention Israel, which currently occupies a significant portion of Lebanon and has been involved in near-daily strikes since early March, resulting in at least 3,000 deaths and over one million displaced persons.

The agreement’s silence on Israel is notable, as it only covers the US-Iran relationship. The implementation of a ceasefire in Lebanon remains unclear, with no mention of Iran’s support for proxy groups or Israel’s withdrawal from the country.

Lebanon has been a key point of contention during negotiations between the two countries. Tehran has repeatedly stated that an end to Israeli military operations in Lebanon is necessary for any broader peace deal.

The US and Iran met in Pakistan in April for their first direct talks since 1979, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf publicly stating that a ceasefire by Israel in Lebanon and the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad were non-negotiables for Tehran.

The agreement also includes provisions on respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, suggesting that the Trump administration has relinquished any hopes of forcing regime change in Iran.
