Republic of Ireland to Face Israel in Nations League Matches
The Republic of Ireland national team is set to play Israel in two upcoming matches as part of the UEFA Nations League. The fixtures have been the subject of controversy, with some Irish politicians and football figures calling for a boycott of the games.
In November, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) passed a motion requesting that UEFA suspend Israel from international competition due to concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza. However, UEFA did not support this request.
Icelandic manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has expressed his team’s desire to play against Israel, stating that “winning this war” would be the best approach for his team. Hallgrimsson believes that playing against Israel will allow Ireland to represent their country and perform well, regardless of the opponent.
The FAI has maintained that it had no choice but to fulfill the two fixtures against Israel, despite concerns over the October 4 match in Dublin. However, Hallgrimsson notes that playing at home would be a disadvantage for his team, as they have established a strong record at Aviva Stadium.
Protests have taken place in the Irish parliament, with some calling for the FAI to reconsider its decision. The FAI has stated that it will proceed with the fixtures as scheduled.
