Israeli forces arrive in Nabatieh, a major city in southern Lebanon

Israeli Forces Cross Litani River for First Time Since 2006, Advance on Nabatieh City

Israeli military forces have crossed the Litani River in southern Lebanon for the first time since 2006, according to senior Lebanese military sources. The crossing has taken place within the Israeli-declared buffer zone and has positioned Israeli troops on the outskirts of Nabatieh, a key city in southern Lebanon’s economy.

Nabatieh is considered a culturally significant location due to its historic role as a frontline in Israeli assaults. If the city falls, it would mark a notable development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon, which began in October 2023.

According to Al Jazeera reporter Obaida Hitto, Israel appears to be expanding its air campaign in southern Lebanon and encircling Nabatieh in preparation for potential assault on the city. Lebanese military officials have reported that two soldiers were seriously wounded as a result of being targeted by an Israeli drone near Nabatieh.

Hezbollah has responded by firing rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona, while also ambushing Israeli soldiers near Ghandouriyeh in southern Lebanon and forcing them to withdraw. Israel has issued evacuation orders for at least 10 villages in southern Lebanon, citing concerns about potential harm to residents if they remain.

The latest development comes as Israel and Lebanese officials engage in ongoing peace talks, facilitated by the United States. A new round of negotiations is expected to take place in Washington next week.
