Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi made statements on Sunday during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, addressing concerns about China’s military expansion and transparency. Koizumi claimed that China lacks transparency regarding its military activities, while Japan has been increasing its own defence spending.
Koizumi stated that China’s rapid expansion of its military is a matter of concern for both Japan and the international community. He pointed out that despite having a significant arsenal of nuclear weapons and strategic bombers, Japan does not possess such capabilities. Koizumi emphasized Japan’s commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as its efforts to uphold a “free and open international order”.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously called on Asian Pacific countries to be vigilant and resist what it described as Japan’s neo-militarism. At the Shangri-La Dialogue, Chinese delegate Major General Meng Xiangqing criticized Japan for not having eradicated its toxic legacy of militarism.
Koizumi stressed the importance of dialogue in achieving regional stability, stating that transparency comes from discussion and engagement. He noted that China had not sent its defence minister to the conference, but emphasized that Japan remains open to engagement with China and other regional players.
Separately, Koizumi praised US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth for his commitment to the Asia Pacific, while also stressing the need for strong coalitions globally. He stated that division weakens deterrence and unity strengthens it.
