Lebanon’s Leaders Meet with Israel in Washington for Direct Negotiations
Lebanese leaders have held a meeting with Israeli officials in Washington for the first time in over 30 years. The talks aim to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty under terms that are considered challenging.
According to an agreement reached on April 16, Lebanon must demonstrate its ability to assert sovereignty as a condition for extending the fragile ceasefire. Israel has reserved the right to take “all necessary measures in self-defence” at any time and maintains forces deployed on Lebanese soil.
The framework for Lebanon’s sovereignty is based on this agreement. Beirut is expected to address Hezbollah’s armament, while Israel retains military freedom inside Lebanese territory with no credible pathway to deterrence.
US officials view the talks as a positive development, citing the weakening of Iran’s influence in Lebanon and the willingness of the Lebanese government to accept US demands. The White House sees an opportunity for cooperation between the US and Israel.
However, experts argue that the current path imposed by the US and Israel may not lead to a stable Lebanese state. Hezbollah has significantly undermined the state’s monopoly on force, building and maintaining a military structure outside formal institutions.
The Lebanese government has taken steps to address this issue, including dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure south of the Litani River and outlawing its military wing. The government has also expelled the Iranian ambassador and ordered authorities to identify and arrest individuals linked to Hezbollah.
This development marks a significant shift in Lebanon’s politics, with the government now including Hezbollah and its allies in a national unity government.
