Moroccos Rise to Football Prominence Ahead of World Cup 2026

Morocco’s National Football Team Achievements Reach New Heights

In recent years, Morocco has experienced significant success in international football competitions. The country’s men’s national team, known as the Atlas Lions, reached the semifinals at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and is currently ranked among the top 10 of the FIFA men’s rankings.

Morocco’s success extends beyond the senior men’s team, with achievements also recorded by various age groups and categories. The country has won several titles, including the 2025 AFCON championship, the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup championship, and the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) title.

According to a source close to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Morocco’s success can be attributed to three key pillars: good governance, financial investment, and competent human resources. The country’s governance reform efforts, including the creation of a national department for financial control, have helped professionalize the financial structure of Moroccan football.

Massive investments in infrastructure have also played a crucial role in the country’s football development. Thousands of local football pitches, known as “proximity fields,” have been built across the country, providing mass participation opportunities for everyone. The Mohammed VI complex and academy in Maamoura, just outside Rabat, has become a renowned technical center, producing top talent such as Olympique de Marseille’s Nayef Aguerd and Girona’s Azzedine Ounahi.

The African federations’ lobbying efforts to reform national eligibility rules have also contributed to Morocco’s success. The country has secured the services of players like Hakim Ziyech, Nordin Amrabat, and Brahim Diaz, who have helped shape the team’s competitive edge. The latest addition to the Atlas Lions is 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who has attracted attention from French national team coach Zinedine Zidane.

Morocco’s football development strategy has been in place since 2008, with King Mohammed VI laying out the foundation for a long-term project. The country’s achievements serve as a testament to the effectiveness of this strategy, which combines good governance, financial investment, and competent human resources.
