New York City Swears In Zohran Mamdani as Mayor

Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as Mayor of New York City

New York, NY - Zohran Mamdani has been sworn in as the mayor of New York City, marking a historic milestone for the city’s first Muslim and youngest mayor in generations. The 34-year-old Democrat was inaugurated at a decommissioned subway station in Manhattan on Thursday morning.

Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran during the ceremony administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James. He will be sworn in again in a public ceremony at City Hall, followed by a block party on Broadway.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York City with his family at the age of 7. His father is an academic and author, while his mother is a filmmaker. Mamdani became an American citizen in 2018.

Mamdani’s platform included policies aimed at reducing the cost of living in one of the world’s most expensive cities, such as free child care, free buses, and rent freezes for approximately 1 million households. He also proposed a pilot program for city-run grocery stores.

As mayor, Mamdani will be responsible for managing various aspects of the city, including trash collection, snow removal, and public transportation. His inauguration marks the beginning of one of the most high-profile roles in US politics.
