Powerful 4.8 magnitude earthquake strikes near Venezuela region

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake has been detected off the coast of Venezuela, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake occurred at 3:20pm local time near northern Aragua state. Reports have surfaced of several aftershocks and smaller quakes in the region.

Venezuela was struck by twin magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on Wednesday, resulting in significant damage and loss of life. At least 1,430 people have been confirmed dead, while an additional 51,000 are reported missing. Authorities have stated that finding survivors beyond the 72-hour mark becomes increasingly unlikely.

The latest earthquake was located approximately 70km west of Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. No immediate damage has been reported related to this quake. Wednesday’s earthquakes caused extensive destruction in La Guaira state, with some areas in Caracas also experiencing significant damage.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with foreign rescue teams arriving in the country on Saturday. The situation is being complicated by reports of a lack of organization in recovery efforts and mobile/internet outages in certain areas.
