Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Calls for De-escalation in Middle East Conflict
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s minister of state for foreign affairs, has urged a de-escalation of hostilities across the Middle East. Al-Khulaifi emphasized that Iran’s attacks on its regional neighbors bring “no benefit to anyone” and called for a return to negotiations between Iran and the US.
The conflict in the region has resulted in casualties, damaged critical infrastructure, and disrupted the energy-driven economy. Qatar remains concerned about the wider range of attacks, including those against civilian infrastructure. The country condemns the unjustified attacks on Qatar and will take “every possible and legal measure” to defend itself.
Al-Khulaifi stated that a global solution is necessary to ensure the Gulf’s energy supply chain continues through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been severely disrupted by the conflict. He noted that Iran’s targeting of countries such as Qatar and Oman, which had previously served as regional mediators, makes it impossible for them to play that role while under attack.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani recently urged Iran to cease attacks on its neighbors during a phone call with Tehran. Al-Khulaifi reiterated the point that regional countries are not enemies of Iran and encouraged US President Donald Trump to cease hostilities. Qatar maintains open communication with officials in the US, encouraging peaceful resolution of conflicts through diplomatic means.
The minister’s comments highlight the need for a negotiated solution to the conflict, with Qatar emphasizing its commitment to finding a peaceful pathway forward.
