Teams qualify for 2026 World Cup round of 32 knockout stage revealed

FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Format and Qualification Criteria Revealed

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage is nearing completion, with 28 teams having qualified for the tournament. The round of 32 will take place from June 28 to July 3, followed by the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a playoff for third place. The final match is scheduled for July 19.

The top two teams in each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-place finishers, will advance to the knockout phase. FIFA has introduced head-to-head records as the primary tie-breaker for teams level on points, replacing goal difference for the first time at a World Cup.

In the event of a tie, the following criteria will be applied in order: (1) head-to-head record, (2) total goals scored, and (3) the eight best third-place finishers. The knockout stage format is as follows:

  • Round of 32 (June 28- July 3)
  • Round of 16
  • Quarterfinals
  • Semifinals
  • Playoff for third place

As of June 27, several teams have qualified for the knockouts. Mexico topped Group A with a 1-0 win over South Korea, while the United States secured their spot with a 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D. Germany entered the last 32 with a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, and Argentina sealed their ticket with a 2-0 victory over Austria.

Other teams that have qualified include France, Norway, Colombia, Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Mexico’s cohosts. The knockout stage is expected to be an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
