Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Calls for De-escalation in Middle East Conflict
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s minister of state for foreign affairs, has urged a de-escalation in hostilities across the Middle East. Al-Khulaifi emphasized that Iran’s attacks on its neighbors bring “no benefit to anyone” and called for a return to negotiations between Iran and the United States.
The situation has been exacerbated by a nearly two-week-long bombardment campaign from the US and Israel, which has resulted in casualties, damaged critical infrastructure, and disrupted the region’s energy-driven economy. Al-Khulaifi stated that Qatar remains “extremely worried” about the wider range of attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Qatar condemns the unjustified and outrageous attacks on its state, directly impacting its sovereignty. The country will continue to take all necessary measures to defend itself against these aggression. Al-Khulaifi also highlighted the importance of a global solution to ensure the Gulf’s energy supply chain remains uninterrupted through the Strait of Hormuz.
Notably, Iran has targeted countries such as Qatar and Oman, which had previously served as regional mediators. Al-Khulaifi stated that neither country can fulfill this role while under attack, emphasizing the need for Iran to understand this reality. He also mentioned a recent phone call with Tehran, where he urged Iran to cease attacks on its neighbors.
Qatar maintains open communication channels with officials in the US and has encouraged President Donald Trump to cease hostilities. Al-Khulaifi reiterated the importance of finding a peaceful solution to resolve conflicts through negotiations.
