Somalia Expresses Concern Over Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland
In a letter to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Somalia expressed concern over Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. The move, which was announced last week, has been met with criticism from Somalia, which views it as a threat to its sovereignty.
According to Somalia’s letter, the recognition may serve as a pretext for the forced relocation of Palestinians in Northwestern Somalia. The country is urging UNSC members to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The United Kingdom has also stated that it does not recognize Somaliland’s independence and reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty. Other countries, including China and South Africa, have declined to recognize Somaliland, with some expressing concerns over the potential for external interference in the region.
The US deputy representative to the UN, Tammy Bruce, has defended Israel’s right to establish diplomatic relations with Somaliland, citing the country’s own recognition of a non-existent Palestinian state. However, she acknowledged that there have been no changes in US policy regarding Somaliland.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following a civil war. The self-declared republic controls part of northwestern Somalia and has its own constitution, currency, and flag. Its eastern regions remain under the control of rival administrations loyal to Somalia.
