South Africa manager vows firm approach against Cameroon in AFCON 2025

South Africa Coach Hugo Broos Vows to Show No Mercy Against Cameroon in AFCON Last 16

Hugo Broos, the coach of South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, has stated that he will show “no mercy” to his former side, Cameroon, when they face off in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. The match will take place at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Broos led Cameroon to an unexpected AFCON title in Gabon in 2017 and has expressed a mix of emotions about facing his former team. “Tomorrow’s game is surely a special game for me,” he said. “I have won an AFCON with a country, but I must focus on winning this game.”

Cameroon took seven points from nine possible points in the group stage, despite a chaotic build-up to the tournament. The team has undergone significant changes, including the appointment of new coach David Pagou.

Broos expressed surprise at Cameroon’s performance and acknowledged that they have a good fighting spirit and mentality. “I would have preferred to face them in the final,” he said. “However, I am curious to see how they will perform with all the changes in their team.”

The 73-year-old coach also expressed frustration with tournament organizers for forcing his side to train at the Moroccan national team’s facility, which is a 45-minute drive from their hotel.

Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, whoever wins will face Morocco in the quarterfinals. Bafana Bafana have qualified for this year’s World Cup and are hoping to match their run to the semifinals at the last AFCON in the Ivory Coast in 2024.
