Valais Police Identify 16 More Victims in New Year’s Eve Bar Fire
The Valais police have identified 16 more victims from a fatal fire at a bar in Crans-Montana, southern Switzerland, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 24. The victims include 10 Swiss nationals, two Italians, one person with Italian-Emirati citizenship, one Romanian, one French national, and one from Turkiye.
Among those identified are teenagers aged between 16 and 18, as well as a 14-year-old Swiss girl who is the youngest victim to have been killed. The police continue to work on identifying the remaining casualties from the fire that injured approximately 119 people, with some suffering severe burns and being transferred to burn units across Europe.
The investigation into the cause of the fire has led to two individuals being placed under criminal investigation for suspected offences including homicide by negligence. The Swiss authorities are also working to provide support to families affected by the tragedy.
Local residents have expressed their grief and solidarity, with some sharing personal accounts of the devastating event. A 24-year-old man from a neighboring town reported hearing screams during the fire and is still searching for information about a friend who worked at the bar.
