Syria’s Interim Government Begins Rebuilding Armed Forces Process
The new interim government in Syria has initiated efforts to rebuild its national army and security forces. The process, which began with restructuring and recruiting, aims to adopt a new doctrine emphasizing loyalty to the country. Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra stated that the goal is to develop all branches of the armed forces and increase military preparedness and efficiency.
Abu Qasra also mentioned the issuance of rules of conduct and discipline for the newly formed security forces. However, analysts warn that the process may be lengthy and challenging due to various factors, including transforming former armed groups into a professional army and vetting large numbers of recruits.
Key issues include deciding whether to continue using Russian equipment, integrating forces from southern Syria and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeast, and building trust with minority groups. The success of the Syrian armed forces is seen as crucial for providing political stability in the country, which could lead to foreign investment and support.
The collapse of the al-Assad regime on December 8, 2024, led to a significant disruption in Syria’s security apparatus and armed forces. Many former officers and soldiers fled or abandoned their positions, while others surrendered to the new authority. Israel also launched widespread air attacks around the country, destroying approximately 80% of Syria’s strategic military capabilities.
The new government faces numerous challenges, including integrating former opposition groups into its army and addressing sectarian divisions. The situation remains complex, with various factions vying for power and influence in the country.
