Syrias sectarian tensions pose significant challenges to regional stability

Protesters from the Alawite minority group clashed with government supporters in coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous on Sunday. President Ahmed al-Sharaa has been working to rebuild Syria since taking office in January, aiming to re-establish the country’s global presence.
However, recent outbreaks of sectarian violence have hindered his efforts. The latest incident involved protesters from the Alawite minority group confronting supporters of the government in Latakia and Tartous. Government troops deployed to quell the violence were also targeted.
The Alawite community has expressed feelings of marginalization, which may be contributing to the unrest. The extent to which this protest poses a security threat is unclear.
Experts will discuss possible solutions for President al-Sharaa to address the tensions. Fadel Abdulghany, founder and executive director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, Gamal Mansour, specialist in comparative politics and international relations, and Labib Nahhas, director of the Syrian Association for Citizens’ Dignity, are among those invited to share their insights.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing protests and violence reported in various parts of Syria. The government’s response to these incidents will be closely watched as it seeks to maintain stability and rebuild the country.
