Targeting Water Supply in War Exacerbates Global Scarcity Crisis Situation

Water Infrastructure Under Threat in Conflict Zones

The ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran has highlighted the vulnerability of water infrastructure in the region. Desalination plants, which supply millions of people in the Gulf, have been targeted as part of the military operations.

This incident is not an isolated event, but rather one of several examples of water infrastructure being targeted in conflict zones around the world. The United Nations has warned that global water scarcity is becoming increasingly severe due to climate change and rising demands for resources such as AI data centres.

According to experts, the threat to water infrastructure is expected to worsen in the coming years. Kaveh Madani, Director of the UNU Institute for Water, Environment & Health, notes that the world is facing a looming “water bankruptcy” driven by these factors.

Zeina Moneer, an environmental policy and climate programmes expert, adds that the impact of this trend will be felt globally, with far-reaching consequences for human health and economic stability. The targeting of water infrastructure in conflict zones underscores the need for increased investment in water security measures to mitigate the effects of global scarcity.
