Uruguay players stage mutiny against coach El Loco before World Cup

Uruguay’s World Cup Chances Under Threat as Bielsa Faces Internal Dissent

Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay’s manager, is facing an internal challenge within the team ahead of the upcoming World Cup. The 70-year-old coach has been criticized for his demanding coaching style, which has led to rumors of dressing room unrest.

Bielsa, known as “El Loco” due to his unconventional methods, has a reputation for inspiring younger coaches with his bold approach. However, his high-energy style has also caused friction during his nomadic coaching career. Uruguay’s recent performances have been disappointing, and the team’s qualifying campaign was marked by inconsistency.

The turning point came at the Copa America in 2024, where Bielsa’s intensity led to criticism from players. Luis Suarez, who retired from international football after the tournament, claimed that Bielsa reduced Darwin Nunez to tears during a match against Argentina. Bielsa acknowledged that his authority was affected by Suarez’s backlash.

Uruguay’s recent results have also been concerning, including a 5-1 friendly defeat to the USA in November. As Bielsa prepares for his third World Cup with a different nation, there are doubts about whether he can win back the faith of his players.

Bielsa has previously hinted that he may not remain as manager beyond the World Cup. The Uruguayan Football Association reported that his current contract expires at the end of June 11-July 19. Bielsa’s comments have sparked speculation about his future with the team.

Despite his reputation, Bielsa’s coaching style is being tested in the lead-up to the World Cup. His teams often struggle to maintain their energy and momentum over a prolonged period. The grueling conditions of Miami and Guadalajara, where Uruguay will face Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Spain in Group F, may further test his approach.

Bielsa’s past successes with clubs like Newell’s Old Boys, Athletic Club, and Marseille have earned him admiration from fellow coaches. Pep Guardiola has praised Bielsa as a “genius” with charisma, while Mauricio Pochettino described him as a person who inspires love and admiration.
