US President Donald Trump Announces Plan to Govern Venezuela After Military Operation

In a news conference held at Mar-a-Lago on January 3, US President Donald Trump announced that a military operation had successfully captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both individuals are facing US charges related to cocaine trafficking under newly unsealed indictments.

Trump stated that the US would assume control of Venezuela until a “safe, proper, and judicious transition” could be made. He also named Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president, following discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, Rodríguez has criticized the military action, calling it “brutal aggression,” and is advocating for Maduro’s immediate release.

Maduro has been leading Venezuela since 2013, succeeding Hugo Chavez, who was in office from 1999 to 2007. Relations between the US and Venezuela have deteriorated over foreign policy, oil, and human rights issues. In July 2024, Maduro declared victory after an election that international observers described as fraudulent.

The US government had previously taken action against vessels off the coast of Venezuela, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people. Trump has stated that this was an effort to thwart drug smuggling. Following Maduro’s arrest, Trump mentioned speaking with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, but did not provide further details.
