US President Donald Trump held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, discussing various issues including trade, energy, Taiwan, Iran, and Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to Trump, the conversation was “all very positive” and highlighted the importance of maintaining good relations between the two countries.
Trump stated that his personal relationship with Xi is “extremely good” and emphasized the need for both leaders to prioritize their relationship. The US president also mentioned that he will be traveling to China in April, although no further details were provided.
During the call, Trump and Xi discussed the situation in Iran, which has been marked by recent protests and a security crackdown. Trump stated that he had threatened to take action if Tehran does not make concessions on various issues, but did not provide further information.
A readout of the call from the Chinese government noted that differences between the US and China can be addressed amicably as long as they are based on equality and respect. However, the issue of Taiwan remains a key priority for Beijing, with Xi emphasizing its importance in China-US relations.
The Chinese leader stated that the US should approach arms sales to Taiwan with caution, citing concerns over national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US had previously approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, which was seen as a significant boost to the island’s defense capabilities.
Additionally, Trump mentioned that China has agreed to increase its purchase of US soybeans from 12 million tonnes in the current season to 20 million tonnes, with plans to buy 25 million tonnes in the following season.
