US President Donald Trump Announces Military Intervention in Venezuela
In a statement released shortly after a major operation to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump praised the military for its actions, describing it as “one of the most stunning, effective and powerful displays of American military might” in US history. He also announced that Maduro and his wife would be indicted in New York on charges of narcotics trafficking.
Trump stated that US operations have reduced maritime drug trafficking by 97 percent, although this figure has not been verified. He also declared that the US would “run the country” until a transition could be arranged, while threatening further action if necessary.
The Trump administration’s actions in Venezuela are part of a broader assertion of US dominance over the Western Hemisphere, as stated in the 1823 Monroe Doctrine. The US military intervention is the latest example of US involvement in regime change operations in Latin America, which have been ongoing for centuries.
Historically, the US has supported coups and military dictatorships throughout the region, including in Guatemala in 1954, Chile in 1973, and Grenada in 1983. The US has also provided training, funding, and political cover for military regimes that have tortured dissidents and murdered civilians.
The Venezuelan regime change operation is likely to create regional instability, as it may lead to a refugee crisis and exacerbate existing tensions between neighboring countries. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has expressed concern about the potential consequences of US intervention in Venezuela.
In response to Trump’s threat to intervene in Venezuela, other leaders in the region are taking notice. The situation remains uncertain, with many questions still unanswered about the future of Venezuela and its people.
